Super ( The Quantic Soul Orchestra Cover)Bonobo
A mighty selection of the most pivotal and interesting cover versions to have peppered Tru Thoughts’ ten year history of releases.
Among this selection, ‘Tru Thoughts Covers’ boasts many crossover hits; from Nostalgia 77 and Alice Russell’s epic take on the White Stripes; to The Quantic Soul Orchestra’s version of 4Hero; via the Bamboos’ mod-soul re-imagining of Kings Of Leon; and Hot 8 Brass Band’s rambunctious, world-renowned version of “Sexual Healing”, taking Marvin Gaye to the Mardi Gras. Between them these songs have gained tremendous acclaim, and radio play on a huge spectrum of stations, including BBC Radio 1 & 2, 6Music, BBC London, XFM and NME Radio. In addition, this 17-track collection also features new exclusive tracks from the likes of Lizzy Parks, Woon, Aldo Vanucci and Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro.
The different twists and turns a song takes when genres collide can spark great and unexpected musical explosions, and for the artists on Tru Thoughts, covering tracks in heavy funk, soul or leftfield styles has always been part of the game. In the early days, The Quantic Soul Orchestra turned label-mate Bonobo’s downtempo anthem “Terrapin” into a dancefloor bomb; Bonobo returned the favour, twisting the QSO’s debut funk track “Super 8” into a deep downtempo excursion (featured on this CD). Then, in 2004 (pre-dating the high profile high-jinks of one Mark Ronson by a country mile) Nostalgia 77 enlisted the vocals of Alice Russell, and unleashed his stunning, double bass-heavy take on the White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army”, repackaging the song for a whole new audience while bringing two huge talents in the jazz and funk world to the attention of an appreciative wider crowd. And now for a fact you may not know: later on when Ronson, teetering on the brink of world domination, decided to go live and form a top-of-the-range funk band for the purpose, he approached Ben ‘Nostalgia 77’ Lamdin and Will ‘Quantic’ Holland, asking their advice and looking to borrow members of their bands; doubtless coveting Nostalgia’s jazz-inflected vintage cool and the deep, authentic dancefloor-rocking funk sound of The Quantic Soul Orchestra. (Will and Ben, busy with their bands at the time, declined to get involved, but the significant – if unsubtly deployed – point remains!)
Plenty of people habitually pigeonhole music, but this album connects the songs of the White Stripes, Portishead, Marvin Gaye, 4Hero, Max Sedgeley, Mr Scruff, Frank Sinatra, Kings Of Leon, Fedde Le Grand, Michael Jackson, The Strokes, The Kooks, Eminem, Roni Size/Reprazent, The Quantic Soul Orchestra, Jeff Buckley, and Olive. And you don’t see those names on the same sleeve-notes every day.
‘Tru Thoughts Covers’ is on the Unfold imprint, set up to release quality, interesting and independent music of all styles from like minded artists and labels, as well as genre-based or concept compilations of Tru Thoughts music. Recent Unfold releases include the ‘Tru Thoughts Hip Hop’ compilation and the format-busting 90-track DVD from the Fluid Ounce label. In the near future, you’ll hear more from Fluid Ounce, plus new music from the Impossible Ark label including a compilation; the new Jeb Loy Nichols album; and Nostalgia 77’s new project, the Skeleton.

Before Tauron Nowa Muzyka Festiwal 2012
Fri, 10 Feb 2012 20:00:00
VENUE: Fabryka Trzciny ul. Otwocka 14, Warszawa, Poland 03-759
Tuż po nich scenę opanuje utalentowany duet z Cardiff – Man Without Country, których zeszłoroczna, debiutancka płyta Foe zdobyła sporą rzeszę zwolenników, przyciągając z jednej strony fanów depresyjnych kompozycji My Bloody Valentine, z drugiej zaś tych, którzy uwielbiają głębokie, syntezatorowe brzmienia.

Recognising Green’s immense talent, the impeccable Ninja Tune label snapped up Bonobo for the world, following up his debut with Dial M For Monkey, which enjoyed similar success and introduced many musical tourists to the producer, as tracks from it were picked by countless chill-out compilations. Three years later Days To Come was voted ‘Album of the Year’ by listeners of Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide program on BBC Radio 1, it was also one of the biggest selling titles on the label in Australia for 2006.
In 2009, those unlucky enough not to have caught the Bonobo live experience were treated to the Live At Koko DVD, which was followed up by one of last year’s highlight albums Black Sands. Choosing chanteuse Andreya Triana as his weapon of choice, Bonobo took a slightly darker edge on the album, joining the likes of producers like Floating Points who make beautiful soulful electronic music that engage a listen as much as they do entice a dancefloor.
Finally Australian fans, who have been waiting over a decade for this live soul and folk-tronic experience, can enjoy the Bonobo live experience as Simon Green and band come to Australia to play two headline shows and two festival appearances. Regularly selling out large venues across the UK, it’s now our turn to find out why. Do not miss this incredible tour.
