Orbital
Orbital” is an electronic duo consisting of brothers Phil Hartnoll and Paul Hartnoll formed in London, England whose career originally lasted from 1989 until 2004.
Orbital took their name from Greater London’s orbital motorway, the M25, which was central to the early rave scene and party network in the South East during the early days of acid house. One of the biggest names in British electronica during the 1990s, Orbital were both critically and commercially successful, being particularly known for an element of live improvisation during their shows, a rarity with techno acts. They were initially influenced by early electro and punk rock.
In 1989, Orbital recorded a track called “Chime” on their father’s cassette deck. It was released on Oh Zone Records in December 1989, and re-released on FFRR a few months later. The track became a rave anthem, reaching number 17 in the UK charts, and earning them an appearance on Top of the Pops, during which they wore anti-Poll Tax t-shirts. A few singles and EPs followed, and their first self-titled album, a collection of tracks recorded at various times, was released in late 1991.
In late 1992, the “Radiccio” EP barely reached the UK top 40, but it included probably their most well-known song, “Halcyon”. The song featured a backwards sample of Kirsty Hawkshaw from “It’s a Fine Day” (a chart hit for Opus III earlier that year), and B-side “The Naked and the Dead” was similarly based on a line from Scott Walker’s rendition of Jacques Brel’s song “Next”. Halcyon was dedicated to the Hartnolls’ mother, who was addicted to the tranquiliser Halcion (Triazolam) for many years.

Het Britse duo Orbital zijn legendarische electronicapioniers die aan de wieg stonden van de ravecultuur. Het is alweer tien jaar geleden dat de broers Paul en Phil Hartnoll als duo optraden in Nederland. Met de comeback komt tevens een nieuw album uit, waarvan één track al online te beluisteren is.
Orbital werd aan het begin van de jaren '90 één van de grootste namen in de Britse electronica. Dit kwam mede door het element van live improvisatie, baanbrekend destijds. Ze maakten de oversteek van de ravescene naar de charts met nummers als ‘Chime’ en ‘The Box’. Tegenwoordig is de echo van hun pulserende, melodieuze en opgewekte sound nog steeds overal te horen: van dubstep supergroep Magnetic Man tot Caribou, Fever Ray en M83.
Na hun laatste album in 2004 gingen de broers hun eigen weg met verschillende soloprojecten. Gelukkig hebben ze inmiddels het vuur hervonden om samen een nieuwe Orbital plaat op te nemen, welke in april 2012 uitkomt. Het nog titelloze album is een eigentijdse draai aan hun kenmerkende mix van voortstuwende, gloeiende, filmische techno.

Like never before, we are aware of our unique position as a social animal. The carnival of the Olympics, the phenomena of the 2012 prophecies, the arrival of the seven billionth human, the dawn of the urban age: ours is a human world. Yet these ‘mass collective moments’ hint at a richer history, a more varied landscape of ceremonial occasion that have bound men together across the ages, that have reinforced and reinvented that most remarkable of our achievements: society.
This year, as The Garden celebrates her 10th Birthday, we explore those ceremonies, rituals, initiations, anniversaries and carnivals that bind us together, that emphasise matter over mind, that emphasise our true gifts as humans: social existence.
Great Britain has only recently emerged from a period of restrictive manners, customs and hierarchy. The explosion in the middle of the last century, of freedom, sexual liberation and rebellion, represents a volcanic eruption of the irrepressible lava of human expression. The Secret Garden Party, along with all modern hedonic gatherings, has direct links to this awakening and release of the human spirit.
So get your thinking caps on. Dream your own anniversaries, your own ceremonies, your own initiations. Don’t be a spectator, don’t be part of a passive congregation. Create gatherings and parties that breakdown the walls of inhibition, shyness, the other, the stranger. We are already naked, so use your freedom to unite with your fellow Gardener. 2012 is not the end of it all – it is merely a rallying call to unite, to come together, to reinforce the ties that bind.
